Recruitment FAQ
Recruitment Frequently Asked Questions
Does FST provide accommodations during the recruitment process?
Yes. Family Service Toronto is committed to providing an accessible and inclusive recruitment process.
If you require accommodations at any stage of the hiring process, please let us know. We will work with you to identify and provide reasonable accommodations that support your participation and success.
What does FST mean by equitable hiring?
At Family Service Toronto, equitable hiring means creating a recruitment process that is fair, accessible, transparent, and designed to recognize the strengths of candidates from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences.
We recognize that traditional hiring practices can create barriers for some candidates. As a result, we take intentional steps to support a more equitable process, including:
- Having all applications reviewed by members of our Human Resources team rather than using AI screening tools
- Providing accommodations throughout the recruitment process
- Offering interview questions in advance, upon request
- Using structured interviews with consistent questions for candidates applying for the same role
- Focusing on candidates’ skills, experiences, potential, and transferable strengths
- Creating opportunities for candidates to ask questions and learn more about our organization
- Communicating clearly about timelines and next steps throughout the process
Equitable hiring is an ongoing practice of learning and improvement. We continuously review our recruitment processes to identify and remove barriers, increase accessibility, and ensure that candidates are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness throughout their experience with FST.
Can I receive interview questions in advance?
Yes. We recognize that candidates perform best when they understand what to expect.
To support equitable hiring practices, we are happy to provide interview questions in advance or share them during the interview through the virtual meeting chat. If you would benefit from receiving questions ahead of time, please let us know.
Does FST use AI to screen resumes?
No. All applications are reviewed by members of our Human Resources team. We do not use artificial intelligence (AI) to screen resumes or make hiring decisions.
We believe that human review helps us assess candidates more thoughtfully and supports a fair and equitable recruitment process.
How long does the recruitment process take?
Timelines vary depending on the position and number of applicants. Most candidates can expect to hear from us within two weeks of an interview, often sooner.
If timelines change or delays occur, we will keep candidates informed throughout the process.
Will I hear back if I am not selected?
Yes. We believe respectful communication is an important part of the candidate experience.
Candidates who participate in interviews will be informed of the outcome of the recruitment process. We are committed to keeping candidates updated and will not leave you wondering about your status.
Are interviews conducted virtually or in person?
Most first-round interviews are conducted virtually.
Some second-round interviews may be conducted in person at one of our office locations, depending on the role. If an in-person interview is required, we will provide advance notice and details to help you prepare.
How many people will be in my interview?
Most interviews are conducted by a panel of two people, and occasionally three. We aim to keep interview panels small to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for candidates.
What type of questions will I be asked?
Most of our interview questions are behavioural-based. We are interested in learning about your experience, skills, and approach to situations that are relevant to the role.
You may be asked to provide examples of how you have handled challenges, collaborated with others, demonstrated leadership, supported clients, or contributed to positive outcomes in previous roles.
Will there be more than one interview?
Not always. Many positions are filled after one interview.
Some roles, particularly leadership, management, or specialized positions, may require a second interview. If additional interviews are required, we will explain the process and provide information to help you prepare.
Will I be asked to complete a presentation or assignment?
For some positions, particularly leadership or management roles, candidates may be asked to complete a brief presentation or practical exercise related to the role.
If an assignment is required, we will provide clear instructions, timelines, and expectations in advance.
Do I need a Vulnerable Sector Check or Criminal Record Check?
Most positions at Family Service Toronto require a Vulnerable Sector Check and/or Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment. The specific type of screening required depends on the responsibilities of the role and the populations being served.
A criminal record does not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment. We assess screening results on a case-by-case basis, taking into consideration the nature of the position, the relevance of any findings to the role, the circumstances surrounding the infraction, and any applicable legal requirements. Our goal is to ensure a fair and equitable process while maintaining our commitment to client and community safety.
If you have questions or concerns about how a Vulnerable Sector Check or Criminal Record Check may impact your candidacy, we encourage you to contact our Human Resources team. We are happy to discuss the requirements of the position and provide additional information about the process.
Background checks are only requested after a conditional offer of employment has been made. Family Service Toronto will reimburse the cost of any required Vulnerable Sector Check or Criminal Record Check.
